Paediatric Occupational therapy service -Bury Community
The paediatric Occupational Therapy team provides assessment, treatment and support to children and young people who have neurological or developmental conditions.
They provide assessments and treatment at Bury Living Well Centre and several local schools, nurseries and homes.
They accept referrals for children up to the age of 18 years, who are registered with a GP in Bury. This support is available up to 19 yours old for children attending Elms Bank Special School.
Paediatric Physiotherapy service - Bury Community
Paediatric physiotherapists work with babies, children and young people who have physical problems affecting their body. These problems could be due to illness, disability or injury.
Who can we see:
- Children aged 0-16 years in mainstream education; and
- Young people up to the age of 19 years old if they attend Elms Bank Special School.
We are based at the Bury Living Well Centre which is open from 8.00am until 4.30pm Tuesday to Thursday and 8am until 4pm Fridays.
Our service accepts referrals from:
- GP's; and
- School Nurses, Health Visitor's and other health professionals.
We treat a wide range of conditions including;
- Developmental delay e.g., late walking, not sitting;
- neurological e.g., Cerebral Palsy;
- neuromuscular e.g., Duchene's muscular dystrophy; and
- musculoskeletal e.g., back pain;
- neonatal conditions e.g., plagiocephaly with head turning preference, torticollis, erbs palsy
We do not accept referrals for;
- Bilateral (both sides) intoeing
- Talipes if the baby is under 8 weeks old. This is because the majority of children born with positional talipes will not require any treatment to correct the foot posture. However, if the the feet are still turning in by 8 weeks old we will accept a referral from a health professional.
- Falling in children under the age of 3 years
- Curly toes
- Flat feet.

We use treatments such as exercise therapy and massage.
We work closely with you, your parents, Carer's, and a wide range of other professionals like your teachers.
For children and young people with special educational needs we are involved in helping to write your EHC (education and health care) reports. It is important to us that we include your own goals and aspirations.
We can treat you in a variety of places such as the Bury Living Well Centre, your home, school or Nursery.
Equipment
If you need help with walking and standing we can provide you with the equipment you need, such as walking frames and standing frames. If you need to speak to someone about your child's equipment including repairs or growth checks please contact the department on 0161 2060657.
We also work closely with our orthotic colleagues to provide a joint Physiotherapy and Orthotic clinic every two weeks at the Bury Living Well Centre. The contact details for the Orthotic department at Fairfield General Hospital is 0161 7782670.
Referral Notes
Referral is required from the child/ young persons GP, health visitor, school nurse or other allied health professional. We do not accept self - referrals or from parents and carers and education.

Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy
The Paediatric Community Speech and Language Therapy Team provides treatment, support and care for children and young people aged 0 - 18 years, who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

How to request an assessment
Early Years
Have you been offering guidance and support to a family of a child aged 0-5 years but concerns remain around speech, language and communication? If so please refer to our ‘Request for assessment – Preschool’ form.
Please make sure you submit all supporting evidence with your referral, for example: Wellcomm sheets, Checklists and/or the speech sound screen analysis form. In the meantime, please encourage parents to look here Bury Speech and Language Therapy -Parents and Carers
School aged
Have you been offering guidance and support to a school aged child but you are seeing limited progress and concerns remain around speech, language and communication? If so please refer to our ‘Request for assessment – School aged’ form.

Audiology - Northern Care alliance
The Northern Care Alliance provides a range of nationally accredited audiology services for children and adults living in Bury, Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale (HMR) and Oldham. Our experienced and knowledgeable NHS professionals help with hearing and balance assessment, along with support and rehabilitation for conditions such as tinnitus. We offer digital hearing aid fitting and any ongoing care people need.
One in ten children and young people have a diagnosable mental health condition, while similar numbers with less serious mental health problems will need help at some point during their development (Audit Commission 1999).
Pennine Care’s CAMHS (previously know as Healthy Young Minds) are committed to providing a comprehensive and targeted intervention service, delivered in the heart of our communities, which positively aims to promote the emotional and psychological wellbeing of our children and young people.

It’s really common for young people to feel mental and emotional issues and there are lots of things you can do to help yourself feel better. Getting the right support as soon as possible can help you to feel better more quickly, enjoy life and achieve everything you want to.

There is also information for parents or carers and other adults who work with young people, like GPs, teachers and social workers.

Sometimes, problems are more serious, or don't get better. If you feel you need more help, our Healthy Young Minds Service is on hand.
This is an NHS child and adolescent mental health service working across Bury, Heywood, Middleton, Rochdale, Oldham, Stockport, Tameside, Glossop and Trafford. Trained professionals can meet with you to talk about how you are feeling and the problems you are struggling with.
If you feel that you need more help, talk to a teacher, GP or someone else you trust. They can help decide what might be the best option for you.
