If you have previously worked with us on an election before, you do not need to apply again. We will contact you to request your availability.

Eligibility to Work

To work at elections, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be entitled to work in the UK
  • Not be employed or related to a potential candidate
  • Not work on behalf of a candidate or political party

Working at a polling station

Polling station staff are responsible for making sure voting procedures are correctly followed. On polling day, staff must have their polling station set up and ready to open for 7.00am, working through the day until after the close of polls at 10.00pm.

All staff employed to work at a polling station must attend a training session before taking up their appointment. The roles available are listed below:

Working at the count

Counting staff are responsible for verifying and counting the votes either overnight immediately after the close of polls or the day following. This role requires high levels of concentration and accuracy.

Count Runners are responsible for conveying ballot boxes, polling station and count equipment around the count venue. This role involves lifting and carrying. The roles available are listed below:

Working at Postal Vote Opening

Postal Vote Opening staff are responsible for opening and verifying postal votes. This usually takes place during the daytime ahead of the close of polls, plus a last session following the close of polls. The roles available are listed below:
