The purpose of the Count Runner team is to collect ballot boxes, polling station stationery and equipment from the Presiding Officers; to hand in necessary paperwork to the Ballot Box Reception team; and to convey the ballot boxes to the relevant locations within the Count venue, as directed by the Deputy Returning Officer.
The role of the Count Runner must be undertaken in a systematic and timely manner. Duties involve lifting and carrying ballot boxes, bags and other equipment. This may be for some distance and may include stairs and heavy loads. Count Runners are expected to work until all duties are completed and are not permitted to leave the venue until allowed to do so by the Returning Officer. Count Runners are expected to assist with packing away at the end of the count.
Key responsibilities and activities:
- Arrive at the count venue promptly and sign-in on arrival
- Have ready and agree to the terms of Secrecy Requirements
- Always act impartially and respect confidentiality of material handled
- Wear high visibility vest provided
- Work as part of a team to receive ballot boxes, equipment and stationery from Presiding Officers
- Convey ballot boxes, equipment and stationery to designated area inside the count venue
- Remain at the count venue until the end of the count and sign-out at the end of the shift.
Pay: TBC
Hours/ days required:
Count – Typically 8.30am-5.00pm for local government elections. Typically, 9.00pm-4.00am for Parliamentary elections.
Delivery of ballot boxes – immediately following close of polls, 10.00pm on polling day.
