Job Title: Counting Assistant

Job Type: Administrative

Counting assistants sort and count the votes cast at polling stations, along with postal votes. Depending on the election, counting may take place straight after the polls close at 10pm on polling day or on the following day. Our election counts are usually at Castle Leisure Centre, Bolton Street, Bury, BL9 0EZ.

The length of time the count takes will depend on the size and nature of the election and whether re-counts are required. You must be prepared to stay as long as it takes. If the Count takes place immediately after the close of poll, you will start working late into the evening and potentially into the early hours of the morning (or later) until finished. You will be given adequate breaks and refreshments will be provided.

The Returning Officer is not permitted to employ anyone who is/or who has carried out duties on behalf of any political party or candidate at the election. This includes subscribing to a nomination paper. All staff will be required to confirm their agreement to maintain the secrecy of the poll.

Count assistants must:

  • Comply with instructions and attend training
  • Refrain from engaging in conversations with candidates, agents, councillors or guests
  • Have read and agree to the terms of the Statement of Secrecy
  • Dress appropriately in neutral colours
