In an initiative aiming to bridge the digital divide, Bury Council has partnered with Getech to repurpose council’s donated laptops into Chrome OS Flex devices. This project aimed to empower priority groups within the community by providing them with the digital tools necessary to participate in everyday social and economic activities.

The primary objective of this initiative was to ensure that residents at highest risk of digital exclusion in Bury have access to the technology they need to thrive. This includes access to work, education, services, healthcare, and community involvement.

Bury Council, with the help of Bury Library's Digital Inclusion Officer, has refurbished donated laptops and converted them to Chrome OS devices using ChromeOS Flex. This collaboration with Getech has been instrumental in making the project a success and the process smooth for both the council and the end user - residents. Bury VCFA partnered with us on the project, which allowed the council to utelise their Google Workspace for management of the enrolled devices.

Key Benefits of refurbished devices with ChromeOS Flex

  • Sustainability: By repurposing old devices, the initiative reduces e-waste, extends the lifespan of technology, and promotes a circular economy.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: ChromeOS Flex provides a budget-friendly solution, allowing more people to be equipped with necessary technology.
  • Digital Equity: Ensuring that everyone in Bury has the opportunity to participate fully in the digital society.

The project has had a significant impact on the community, providing essential digital access to those who need it most including residents and 3rd sector partners supporting those who are unemployed, care leavers, refugees, asylum seekers, people living with disabilities and LGBTQA+ network group. By equipping priority groups with laptops, the initiative has enabled individuals to improve their employment prospects, access educational resources, and stay connected with essential services.

This initiative by Bury Council and Getech is a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing digital inequality. By providing refurbished Chrome OS devices to priority groups, the project is helping to build a more inclusive digital future for the residents of Bury.
