Group of older people

The first of October each year is designated as the United Nations (UN) International Day of Older Persons.

It is a day to recognise and celebrate the contribution of older people in our workplaces and communities.

In the UK an older person is defined as someone who is 50 years of age or over and in Bury approximately 38% of our residents would be considered older people according to the last census in 2021.

Around 24% or 37,000 of our residents are 65+.

LET'S Age Well Together event

Bury Older People’s network, alongside Age UK, the council and Bury VCFA are marking the day with a celebration event to be held at the Age UK Jubilee Centre at Bury Lido, Mosley St, Bury.

  • The Bury Older Peoples Network is in its fourth year and welcomes people aged 50 and over to join their monthly meetings to have their voices heard on things that matter to them and to influence the services and support offered across Bury. The network has prioritised four themes as their focus for 2025-2027, 'Working Together', 'Work and Money', 'Places' and 'Ageing Well' and invites older people to join them in conversation to make sure Bury continues to be a great place to live and age well.

Bury is proud to have achieved ‘Age Friendly’ status for its work with initiatives such as Take a Seat, dementia care and the prevention of falls within care homes.

  • Bury is first in Greater Manchester and eighth in England for good and outstanding rated care home beds
  • We have the lowest emergency admission for over 65s in the North West
  • Fairfield General recognised as being the second best hospital in England for efficient and effective pathway for older adults
  • Top 10 CQC ratings for adult care homes in England

Our Older People’s Staying Well Team provides support for advice, support and assistance to enable you to remain healthy, happy and independent for longer.

Our Live Well Service is out in the community supporting all adults and older adults to

  • Adopt a better lifestyle to reduce the risk of developing one or more long term conditions
  • Manage long term conditions to help them stay as independent and healthy as possible, prevent complications and the need to go into hospital.

Bury is also part of the GM Ageing in Place Pathfinder project, working with Persona.

Our project has engaged with people initially in Moorside to understand what will make their community a better place to age in.

Lots of ideas and collaboration with the local community saw the opening of the Café on The Green in Clarence Park and older people have also created a growing space for the whole community to enjoy.

We now have many older people volunteering to support both the café and the allotment space, growing produce used in the café and often joined by young people, encouraging intergenerational activities.

Bury will be rolling out this project to five other sites across the townships during the next three years.

Take a Seat

‘Take A Seat’ is about raising awareness of how older people sometimes struggle to get out and about because there isn’t enough seating available for them to rest.

To encourage more older people to venture out to their local shops, Age Friendly Bury is helping local businesses to understand the importance of offering a seat to an older person should they need it.

Venues taking part have a ‘We Are Age Friendly’ sticker displayed in their window. or you can find out more at Take a Seat Bury | The Bury Directory
