Market Street is closed between its junction with Angouleme Way to Trinity Street.
Access to Market Street facilities is from the south of Market Street only. For other town centre facilities, please follow the signed diversion - Angouleme Way/Manchester Road/Wellington Road.
By Monday 9 February
Market Street will be closed between its junction with Trinity Street to Market Street Bridge for approximately 10 weeks. Access to Market Street facilities is as follows.

Woodbury Centre, Digital Centre, University Centre and Trinity Street car park: Access via Angouleme Way/Market Street.

Millenium Centre, college staff/visitor car park and the athletics track: Access via Wellington Road/Market Street.
For other town centre facilities, please follow the signed diversion (Angouleme Way/ Manchester Road/Wellington Road).
The road closure explained
If you have been wondering why the road is closed off again, so soon after last year’s closure, and why both sets of works couldn’t be carried out together, here’s the full picture.
- 2025 closure: Required for essential, safety-critical £500,000 bridge repairs that couldn’t wait.
- Current closure: Required for major improvements as part of the Fishpool and Pimhole Bee Active Travel Scheme - a £5.7m investment to make local journeys safer, greener, and better connected.
Why couldn’t these projects happen at the same time?
- The bridge works were urgent and had to be completed first.
- When the bridge works were on site, we were still engaging with the community on the active travel scheme.
- It wasn’t practical to carry out other works while the bridge was temporarily supported.
- Safe access had to be maintained to Bury College.
- For health and safety reasons because Market Street forms part of the Bury College and Holy Cross College campus area, with over 8,000 students across the two colleges.

We completely understand that two closures on a key route are frustrating but please bear with us - these improvements will make a real difference to road safety, help reduce road traffic collisions and improve connectivity to local facilities. Plus, Market Street will be resurfaced as part of the scheme.
We will continue to provide regular updates on the scheme as a whole and advance notice of upcoming temporary road closures.
As part of the Bee Network this multi-million-pound scheme is funded by the UK Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement and the Mayor’s Challenge Fund. A total of 12 projects will be carried out and completed by winter 2026.
