About the bridge and scheme

The bridge carries Market Street over the East Lancashire Railway line and is a key route in and out of the town centre.

Inspections of the bridge identified that works were required to ensure its structural stability.

The scheme replaced the existing bridge bearings, which are crucial for supporting the bridge and keeping it stable.

These essential works ensured the bridge remains safe, reliable and fully operational for all road users, pedestrians and for the East Lancashire Railway line running underneath it.

The cost of the scheme was £500,000.

Following a five-month renovation project, the scheme completed in November 2025.

Bury Council’s engineering services team co-ordinated and supervised the works from start to finish. The appointed contractor, Bethell, was responsible for ensuring all works were carried out safely.
