We’ve been working on plans to enhance walking, wheeling, and cycling routes as part of the Bee Network and efforts to create the UK’s largest active travel network across Greater Manchester.
Collectively, these projects aim to create safer, more connected routes for everyone.
Funding sources include:
- £9 million UK Government/Greater Manchester City Region sustainable Transport Settlement.
- £2.5 million Greater Manchester Walking and Wheeling Fund
- £1.25 million UK Government Active Travel Fund (Round 4)
Here’s a summary of some of the upcoming schemes in Radcliffe.
Spring Lane junction
Funding approved for a new protected junction near the Metrolink Park and Ride and a path alongside the new Star Radcliffe Academy access road.
- Work due to start in early 2025.
Town centre links
Following consultation, plans for connecting the Metrolink stop to the Radcliffe Hub are being finalised.
- Construction to begin as Radcliffe Hub nears completion in 2026.
Victoria Street / School Street neighbourhood
Initial feedback from the community has been gathered so that proposals to improve connectivity can be drawn up.
- Further community engagement is planned for Spring 2025.
Metrolink stop
A new access ramp and crossing will provide a direct route to the tram stop through Festival Gardens and a crossing on Church Street West. This will also provide a more direct route for future residents of the new East Lancs Paper Mill housing development.
- Work due to start in 2025, subject to planning permission.
Milltown Street bridge
A new cycling and walking bridge over the River Irwell will replace an old footbridge, improving connections between the Metrolink stop, town centre, and residential areas.
- Construction due to start in Spring 2025
