Accumulations of household refuse

If there is waste accumulating in the garden area or yard of a property, we might be able to facilitate a clearance. We could do this, informally, by contacting the landowner or through enforcement.

If the waste accumulation presents a public health hazard and is likely to encourage odours, flies or vermin, then we can take action under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The type of waste we can deal with formally, using enforcement, includes household refuse or contaminated and rotten soft furnishings.

Formal action cannot be taken for accumulations of waste that do not present a public health hazard, including; building waste, garden waste, inert household items, clean and soft furnishings and untidy gardens.

Open access properties

If entry to the property can be obtained through any ground floor window or door opening, we can arrange for the property to be secured. We cannot deal with properties that are open to access via the first floor of the property.

Internal property conditions

If you believe that conditions inside an empty property are affecting the enjoyment of your property, such as vermin, flies or odours, you can report this to our Neighbourhoods Enforcement team.

Before reporting an empty hazardous house to us, please know that if the property is maintained by Six Town Housing please contact them directly:
