Kyle - SEND Youth Group alumni

One of Bury’s SEND Youth Group alumni is enjoying a new career as a valued member of the pharmacy team at Fairfield Hospital, and his friends from the Youth Group could not be prouder of him.

Kyle, 24, first came to the Bury Youth Group as a teenager after his social worker suggested it would be a good place to meet new people and try new activities outside school. Over six years, he became a well-known figure at the club, enjoying meeting new people and taking part in activities like table football.

When he left Elms Bank School at 18, Kyle joined a supported internship programme run with Fairfield Hospital to help young people with SEND gain work experience. Through that experience, he secured a part-time role and later successfully re-interviewed to become a permanent member of the hospital’s pharmacy team.

Today, Kyle’s work includes checking prescriptions, supporting ward discharges, and ensuring medication supplies are managed safely and efficiently. He enjoys his job at the hospital and is also looking forward to developing in his role in the future.

He says, “I enjoy checking what medication the wards need, making sure prescriptions are right, and helping with patients who are being discharged. It’s good to help things run smoothly. I’d like to stay here in the future and there is potential for me to do more training and take on more responsibilities at work, which I’d like to do.”

Outside work, Kyle now attends the STARS adult social group, which was set up by former youth club members, and has also celebrated some big personal milestones, including buying his first home in Accrington recently.

Scout Stirling, SEND Inclusion Ambassador who runs the youth service groups said:

It’s been brilliant to see how far Kyle has come, from joining youth club as a shy teenager to living independently and thriving in his career. His story shows what can happen when young people are supported to grow in confidence and follow their ambitions. We are all really proud of him.”
