Once a special educational need has been identified, most settings choose to keep a SEND list to support with the identification of the type of need. The setting is asked to categorise the nature of the child's SEND through the census data. It is therefore important that this identification of need is based on careful assessment over time and the primary need categorised accurately. Many SENCOs embark on a cycle of assess-plan-do-review in order to explore the nature of the child’s SEND prior to recording the primary need in order to ensure an accurate classification is recorded.
