Identiplay
Identiplay is an intervention that helps children with social communication difficulties learn to play and develop functional play skills using a parallel copy and play model with set play scripts. See further information in the Teaching play to children with Autism book.
Mediation
Mediation is the way that an adult supports a child to develop their play skills and their learning through play. This involves teaching children how to play with toys as well as helping them to plan and problem solve within their play which supports more general skill development. Mediation techniques can be reduced and withdrawn as children develop and become more skilled. Please see the ‘Ways to Mediate’ document for further information.
Play Based Assessment
Play based assessment is adult interaction with a child using play materials that aims to gather information about the child’s current developmental level in terms of thinking, reasoning, language and other skills; the child’s approaches to learning; and the adult interactions which best support a child’s ability to learn (mediation).
