The Chancellor's 2012 Autumn Statement on 5 December 2012 announced an additional £1.5 billion of Government investment to improve the highway network and reduce congestion. Of this, £215 million of Government capital funds are to be given to Local Authorities to renew, repair and extend the life of the highway network in England.

The Government has created a Pothole Fund worth £200 million, with £168 million being made available to highway authorities in England to repair damage to the local road network. This funding is available for the 2014/2015 financial year (1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015).

The purpose of the Fund is to enable highway authorities to bid for major maintenance projects that are otherwise difficult to fund through normal 'needs based' allocations.
