Introducing the draft Ramsbottom plan

The draft Ramsbottom Town Centre Plan sets out a vision for Ramsbottom Town Centre which will support the town's ongoing success and guide future interventions for the next 10 to 15 years. Although Ramsbottom town centre has performed relatively well of the last few years it is important that we are able to build on its strengths and exploit opportunities.

The draft Ramsbottom Town Centre Plan provides a clear vision for the town along with a series of potential physical improvement projects to enhance Ramsbottom as a place to live, work and visit.

How to take part in the consultation

The consultation is open for six weeks from 4 January to 15 February 2022.

The Ramsbottom plan in more detail

A draft Ramsbottom town centre plan has been developed which will play a key role in building on the town's strengths and in helping to overcome some of the challenges.

Our vision is that over the next ten years, Ramsbottom town centre will have built on its reputation as one of the best places in the region to live, visit and work. It will be an attractive and vibrant destination for its residents, visitors and workers, supported by the East Lancashire Railway, a high-quality restaurant scene, a good range of independent retailers, a popular annual events programme and high-quality workspace for those wishing to base their businesses locally.

The town centre environment and experience of its users will be improved with new and enhanced areas of public realm and event space, improved linkages and better car parking arrangements that will encourage active travel and improve movement and circulation throughout the town.

To support the vision the draft plan proposes a range of physical interventions that will help to support the town's independent businesses, make more of the river, and create improved walking and cycling routes along with a parking strategy that will help to find a better balance for a range of town centre users.

The potential projects include:

  • a new public square and events space in the core town centre to provide the infrastructure to support the delivery of events and to act as a meeting place.
  • improved public realm to provide a network of better-connected streets and spaces by improving existing infrastructure and creating new focal spaces and pedestrianised areas.
  • improved active travel opportunities through strategic pedestrian and cycle links, connecting valuable green assets and amenities to the town centre such as Nuttall Park and new links to the river frontage.
  • a new enterprise centre utilising Market Chambers and the vacant upper floor of the Civic Hall to provide accommodation for a range of self-employed, freelance businesses and business start-ups, along with those residents seeking flexible and agile business space.
  • a Car Parking Strategy which proposes short stay car parking in the heart of the town, and an edge of centre provision which can accommodate longer stay and event parking.

The final Ramsbottom Town Centre Plan will include a series of priority projects which will have been identified through the wider engagement process. We will use the plan to support future funding bids which will help to deliver these improvements.
