Figures and statistics of homelessness and social housing demands in Bury - April 2022

Housing applications

  • 431 new housing applications received
  • Average 28 working days to process an application
  • 1,484 applications on the housing register
    • 701 require a one bedroom property
    • 370 require a two bedroom property
    • 333 require a three bedroom property
    •   70 require a four bedroom property
    •   10 require a five bedroom property

Note: The council do not have any five bedroom properties in their stock. Applicants with a five bed need are able to bid on larger four bed properties that have a separate downstairs reception room.

Waiting times

Applications on the housing register have been waiting on average:

  • 364 days for a one bedroom property
  • 436 days for a two bedroom property
  • 545 days for a three bedroom property
  • 723 days for a four bedroom property
  • 820 days for a five bedroom property

Note: The council do not have any five bedroom properties in their stock. Applicants with a five bed need are able to bid on larger four bed properties that have a separate downstairs reception room.

Properties advertised

Number of properties advertised on Bury Home Options:

  • 51 one bed properties (of which 25 were retirement living properties)
  • 21 two bed properties (of which 8 were a retirement living properties)
  •   2 three bed properties
  •   1 four bed properties

Housing advice and homelessness

  • 347 new cases opened
  • 701 active cases open on 30th April
  • 293 households required advice only
  •   26 households were threatened with homelessness
  •   58 households were accepted as being homeless

 Temporary accommodation

  • 15 households were placed in temporary accommodation
  • Average number of nights staying in temporary accommodation was 127 nights
  • 8 households secured accommodation
  • On 30th April there were 82 households in temporary accommodation
    • 67 families with a total of 126 children
    • 15 single people
  • Bury Council do not use bed and breakfast as temporary accommodation

Footfall and access to services

  • 1414 telephone calls made to housing services
  • number of visitors to housing reception - not currently available
