Every year millions of people suffer from food poisoning such as Salmonella and Campylobacter. This causes unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. In a small number of cases the illness can be much more severe leading to hospitalisation and in extreme cases can result in death.

Anyone suffering from the symptoms of food poisoning should consult their GP who may arrange to take a sample.

If a sample confirms food poisoning, the doctor will notify the Health Protection Agency who may also tell the local authority if they suspect an outbreak or a link to a food business.
