Russia’s invasion of Ukraine took place took place on 24 February 2022 – and, on the third anniversary, Bury is strengthening its support to our Ukrainian communities and friends, and all those affected by the devastating events.

We are twinning with one of two places in Ukraine and welcome your views to help us decide where we twin with.

It is vital we continue demonstrating our support. Bury already had an established Ukrainian community, welcomed 248 people fleeing the 2022 invasion at the start of the ongoing 2022 conflict, and a number of families.

These people remain unable to return to their homeland. Bury Council passed a motion around the time of the second anniversary of the invasion and, as part of that, agreed to explore twinning arrangements.

Through working with representatives of our Ukrainian communities, we have identified two potential places to twin with, Ivano Frankivsk and Uzhgorod.

Ivano-Frankivsk

Ivano-Frankivsk is a city that dates back to the 17th century and has many ancient traditions that it is proud of.

It is situated in the west of Ukraine and is well connected by a network of roads and railways and has air links with European countries.

Ivano-Frankivsk is a city of festivals. There are many festivals held in the city every year, such as an international blacksmiths, cheese and wine festivals as well as farmers and craft markets.

Sports play a large part of life in Ivano-Frankivsk. The city has both male and female basketball teams, football and volleyball teams playing at the highest level.

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council has a firm plan to achieve zero emissions as well as many green spaces including a big city park and lake where residents can relax.

Since the war started, Ivano-Frankivsk has faced many new challenges. It has become a new home for those who have had to leave their homes in west Ukraine. These displaced people have been made welcome and feel at home thanks to the support of the city council and local residents.

Uzhgorod

Uzhgorod, located on the border with Slovakia, has been a beacon of hope and resilience during the ongoing war.

The people of Uzhgorod have shown remarkable strength in the face of adversity, and the bond between Bury and Uzhgorod has already been solidified through direct humanitarian support from the Borough.

As a city that values multiculturalism and boasts a rich cultural heritage, Uzhgorod is an ideal partner for Bury.

Our shared history, including the vital support extended at the start of the war, lays a strong foundation for a lasting and meaningful twin town relationship.
