What is Mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process that helps neighbours resolve disagreements with the support of a trained, independent mediator.
It provides a safe space for everyone involved to share their views, listen to each other, and work towards an agreement.

Mediation is not about taking sides. The mediator does not make decisions or tell anyone what to do. Instead, they help residents find practical, fair solutions that everyone can agree on.

When Can Mediation Help?

Mediation can be offered for a range of neighbour disputes, including:

  • Noise concerns
  • Pet‑related disagreements
  • Lifestyle clashes (e.g., smoking, children playing, parking)
  • Boundary or garden disputes
  • Misunderstandings or communication breakdowns

It is particularly useful in low‑level or early‑stage ASB cases, where issues can escalate if left unresolved.

Why Is Mediation Beneficial?

  • It helps prevent ASB from escalating.
  • It gives everyone a chance to be heard.
  • It promotes long‑term solutions.
  • It improves neighbour relationships.
  • It is voluntary, free, and confidential.
  • It may avoid the need for formal action.

What Happens in Mediation?

  1. Referral: Your Housing Officer may suggest mediation if they feel it could help.
  2. Initial Contact: A mediator will contact each person separately to explain the process and check everyone is willing to take part.
  3. Private Meetings: Each party can discuss their concerns privately with the mediator.
  4. Joint Session: If everyone agrees, a joint meeting is arranged. The mediator guides the conversation, so it stays respectful and constructive. If you are uncomfortable agreeing to a joint meeting the mediator can arrange shuttle mediation.
  5. Agreement: Together, you will explore solutions and may reach a written agreement about how to move forward.

Is Mediation Right for You?

Mediation works best when:

  • You want to improve the situation.
  • You are willing to talk and listen.
  • You prefer to resolve things cooperatively rather than through formal action.

It is not suitable for serious ASB, criminal behaviour, or situations involving threats or violence. These will always be handled through formal processes.
