What is PIP?

A benefit from the Department for Work and Pensions.

It helps with extra living costs if you have a long term physical or mental health condition or disability.

You must be aged 16 or over and under State Pension age when you first claim.

Savings or income do not affect your eligibility.

Does work affect PIP?

No, PIP is not affected by your employment status.

However, what you do at work (for example the tasks you can manage) might influence how your condition is assessed, especially if it contradicts what you report on your form.

Time rules

You must have had the difficulties for at least 3 months already. This shows it’s not just a short-term issue.

You must expect the difficulties to last for at least 9 more months. This shows it’s likely to continue in the future.

Rates of entitlement (2025/26)

Daily Living Component

  • Standard: £73.90/week
  • Enhanced: £110.40/week

Mobility Component

  • Standard: £29.20/week
  • Enhanced: £77.05/week

How is PIP assessed?

You will be assessed on how your condition affects your ability to carry out daily living and mobility activities.

The assessment considers whether you can do tasks safely, reliably, repeatedly and in a reasonable time.
