Communal bins are shared bins we provide for residents that live in flats, sheltered accommodation and other shared properties.

Communal bins are for household waste and recycling only, they must not be used for business waste.

About the bins we provide

The size of bins we provide depends on:

  • The number of residents
  • Available storage space
  • Access for residents and collection crews

The type of bins we provide include:

  • A green bin (for recycling clean paper and cardboard)
  • A blue bin (for recycling plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, aluminium or steel food and drink cans, empty aerosol cans, clean aluminium foil)
  • A grey bin (for bagged waste that can’t be recycled).

It is essential that each bin is used for the right type of waste. We cannot empty bins that have been used for the wrong type of waste.

Help us collect your waste

  • Don’t put large items or extra waste on the floor or on top of the bins because this will not be taken and may be treated as fly tipping.
  • Take large items to a household waste and recycling centre or book a bulky collection
  • Use the correct bin for your waste
  • Don’t put non-recyclable waste in the recycling bins.
  • Always place recycling items loose inside the correct recycling bin
  • Keep bin lids fully closed
  • Keep bin stores locked after use (to avoid waste escaping or the risk of attracting flies)
  • Park vehicles away from the bins where they won’t obstruct the collection truck and crew.

Missed collections

Bad weather, road works, parked vehicles and a range of other operational issues can sometimes mean we are unable to empty bins. If this happens, we will return as soon as we can.

If you sign-up for bin alerts we can send you reminders and updates for all your collections.

Collections we know we have missed are listed on our website at the end of the working day. You do not need to report a missed collection if the list includes your address. Please check the list before reporting a missed collection.

When to report a missed collection to Bury Council

Missed collections should be reported after 5pm on the scheduled day of collection and no later than 1pm the following day.

Important information

If any of the bins contain the wrong type of waste or waste has built up outside of the bins, it is the responsibility of the managing agent/landlord to remove this waste. In these circumstances, report the matter directly to them, not Bury Council.

You can report a missed collection to Bury Council if you can confirm:

  • The bins contain the correct items
  • The waste is contained within the bins with the lids fully closed
  • There is no extra waste on or around the bins
