The Graduated Approach Toolkit (GAT) is an online resource to support Bury schools, services and families with understanding and using the Graduated Approach as outlined in the SEND Code of Practice. The Toolkit can be found here Bury SEND Graduated Approach Toolkit

Although some areas of the Toolkit are still under development, we are hoping for the Early Years section to be populated early in the summer term. Further co-production events are also scheduled for the summer term to seek stakeholder views about the content and structure of the post-16 section. If any service, organisation or individual would like to join the sessions to contribute their ideas about the content or structure of the post-16 section, you will be welcomed at any of the events.

The Continuing Professional Development programme supporting the implementation of the Graduated Approach Toolkit is continuing throughout this academic year and sessions for the remainder of the spring term, and the full summer term are shown below. Attendance at the events is open to anyone. Some of the new sessions are specifically offered with SENCOs in mind but this doesn’t preclude others from attending if they would be of interest.

GAT familiarisation sessions

These 30-minute sessions offer a virtual walkthrough of the Toolkit. They are repeats of the autumn term and spring 1 sessions and are for any practitioner wishing to understand how to navigate the Toolkit and explore its contents. Practitioners only need to attend one session.

GAT Drop-in sessions

These 30-minute phase specific sessions will provide an opportunity for any practitioner to bring a question or an anonymous pupil case for advice and support in using the GAT. SENCOs and practitioners can attend any sessions; content of the sessions will be in response to the questions raised.

Sharing GAT Practice for SENCOs

These 30-minute sessions are for SENCOs to share practice in embedding use of the GAT. These sessions will be led by Bury SENCOs from a range of schools who will talk about how they have used the GAT in their own schools. SENCOs can attend as many of the sessions as they would like to gather a range of ideas and inspiration from colleagues.

Strengthening approaches to SEND for SENCOs

These 30-minute sessions are for SENCOs to revisit pre-Graduated Approach systems and to discuss how decisions are made to put children and young people on the Graduated Approach at SEN Support. The sessions will help SENCOs to better understand expectations in relation to successful applications for top-up funding and service support. All sessions have the same content.

There is no requirement to book on any of the sessions – just turn up to the ones that suit you best.
