Spen Fold Lane, Bury - 15112 Bury to Bolton scheme

The Spen Fold Ln, Bury - 15112 Bury to Bolton scheme is being carried out to:

  • Enhance pedestrian and cycling facilities
  • Support active travel throughout the area
  • Complement other town centre regeneration projects, including Bury Market regeneration.

The scheme will improve connectivity and safety for people who are walking, wheeling and cycling to local facilities.

Funding

The work on Spenfold Lane is being delivered by Walk Wheel Cycle Trust with Bury Council. It's funded by Active Travel England as part of UK-wide programme to improve places for people to walk, wheel and cycle.

Proposed scheme start and finish dates

  • Proposed start date: Winter 2026
  • Proposed completion date: Spring 2027

Disruption from the works

For the full duration of works it will be necessary to close the public bridleway 46sa, a diversion route will be provided for pedestrians, wheelers and horse riders.

For some of the works it will be necessary to close the carriageway, a diversion route will be provided for vehicles.

While it is unfortunate that some disruption is unavoidable during schemes of this nature, we will aim to minimise this as much as possible.

The new features explained

The Spen Fold Lane improvements will address issues with its current condition, reduce maintenance, improve resilience during wet weather and will improve the accessibility and usability of the existing route, to create a safer and more welcoming environment throughout the year.

The proposed works include:

  • New surfacing along the route.
  • Widening of sections of the path to improve accessibility and ease of use.
  • Improved drainage to reduce water build-up and improve year-round usability.
  • New and upgraded lighting to improve visibility and enhance personal safety.
  • General environmental improvements to enhance the appearance of the route.
