Overview
We are committed to creating opportunities for both businesses and individuals, recognising that a thriving economy and good employment go hand in hand.
Supporting local businesses is a key priority because they drive economic growth across our townships, and their success benefits the entire community. Through Bury Means Business, we provide funded services to help businesses start, sustain, grow, and invest, working in partnership with local, regional, and national organisations to deliver comprehensive support.
At the same time, we understand the importance of good work and the many benefits it brings to individuals. Employment offers more than financial stability, it provides social interaction, a sense of identity and self-esteem, opportunities to learn and progress, and contributes positively to health and wellbeing.
Our Employment and Skills Team is here to help residents access training, apprenticeships, and pathways into work, ensuring everyone can share in the benefits of a strong local economy.

Partnerships and teamwork
We work closely with a wide range of partners across Greater Manchester, both strategically and operationally, to deliver the best possible opportunities for residents and businesses. This includes key stakeholders such as educational institutions (Greater Manchester universities, colleges, and schools), delivery partners like The Growth Company, GM Business Growth Hub, GMCA, Disability Confident, local authorities, and the DWP.
Our Business Engagement Team also collaborates with internal council departments to ensure businesses receive seamless support, while our Employment and Skills team works with community and voluntary organisations to help residents access training, employment, and enterprise opportunities.
Future plans and developments
Through Bury Means Business, we’ve developed an updated ‘Bury Offer’ aligned with the council’s strategic priorities. Looking ahead, we will introduce new events and sessions such as networking, workshops, business fairs, and updates on key regeneration projects, while creating platforms to showcase the achievements of Bury’s business community.
These plans sit alongside our wider ambition for the borough. Over the next 20 years, Bury will deliver thousands of new job opportunities through major regeneration, including new employment sites, improved transport infrastructure, a brand-new secondary school, and housing developments.
To make these opportunities accessible, we are committed to providing affordable, lifelong skills and training, supported by innovative employment programmes designed for today’s economy and ready for the future.
