Each year Bury Council must decide whether to change our Council Tax Support Scheme for working age applicants in its area.

There are no changes for Pension Age applicants as they are part of the national scheme.

We are legally required to consult on any changes we propose to make, and we’re asking you to take part in this consultation to find out what you think about our new Council Tax Support Scheme, which would start from 1 April 2026. We are looking to:

  • only include earned income in the assessment - this means that Universal Credit will not be taken into account
  • have broader income ‘bands’ used for assessment
  • introduce a £40.00 flat rate non dependant deduction
