Permanent traffic signals and how to report issues

Permanent traffic signals are installed and maintained by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). Traffic signals on pedestrian crossings such as pelican, puffin, and toucan crossings (not zebra crossings) are also maintained by TfGM.  Any issues should be reported to them direct.

Non-urgent issues

Non-urgent issues should be reported online:

Urgent issues

If the fault is of an urgent nature (eg a fault that seriously affects traffic or safety), contact the Urban Traffic Control Unit by phone:

  • 0161 244 1511

Examples of the types of problems that can be reported

  • Signals not working, including lamps out
  • Timings causing queues and delays
  • Damage to signal equipment
  • Push buttons not working
  • Signal pole leaning
  • Vehicles not being detected

Please note:

  • Traffic signals in Greater Manchester are equipped with telemetry systems that automatically report operational problems.

Temporary traffic signals and how to report issues

Temporary traffic signals are used to safely control the flow of traffic when works are carried out that reduce the available road space. If the works are only for a very brief period on a minor road, stop/go boards may be used instead.

Anyone using temporary traffic lights on the highway must seek our approval to use them.

Where roadworks are taking place there should be a courtesy board in place identifying who is carrying out the works. This board will tell you the company name and their telephone number to report any issues to, such as:

  • The lights are causing excessive traffic delays because they are changing too quickly, or not changing quickly enough
  • The lights aren’t working, or a lamp has failed
  • The lights have been knocked over, moved, stolen or vandalised
