We are investing in better street lighting and switching to energy saving LED lanterns. They last longer and reduce carbon emissions too.

£6.9 million investment programme

Our investment programme is incrementally improving the 20,599 streetlights across the Bury borough.

Over 70% of street lights are now LED and work is ongoing to fit or upgrade lanterns and replace columns that are coming to the end of their serviceable life.

What we do to maintain streetlighting

Across the Bury borough there are more than 20,500 streetlights on the adopted highway.

We have a planned maintenance programme and a team responsible for maintaining streetlighting all year around.

  • Lighting columns are routinely inspected for both electrical and structural faults.
  • Identified faults are either repaired there and then, or on a follow-up visit if replacement parts are required.

Sometimes testing identifies the need to immediately remove a streetlighting column to eliminate any risk to the public.

The removal and replacement of faulty streetlights may not take place at the same time which means there may be some delay in the lighting service, whilst the column is replaced and reconnected to the electricity supply.

The replacement of a column will be identified using a risk-based approach and will be subject to funding and the availability of stock.

Dimming of streetlights

No streetlights are dimmed during morning or evening peak hours.

Out of the 20,500 plus streetlights 2,392 (11.6%) are fitted with a Central Management System (CMS) which allows the lights to be controlled remotely. This includes being dimmed. Most of these lights are not on residential side roads and are currently dimmed down once vehicular and pedestrian activity is at a minimum.

Energy consumption of streetlights

As more LED lanterns are installed, energy consumption is going down year-by-year. The energy consumed for the five-year period 2019 to 2024 is listed below which indicates a gradual reduction.

  • 2023-2024 - 5083542.41 kWh
  • 2022-2023 - 5362673.50 kWh
  • 2021-2022 - 5652246.00 kWh
  • 2020-2021 - 5782057.80 kWh
  • 2019-2020 - 5954987.50 kWh

Reporting a streetlight fault

Unless a streetlight fault is an emergency, you should report a streetlight issue online. This allows you to  check if a streetlight fault has already been reported to us and to check the progress of the repair.

When a streetlight fault is reported, we will attend within 7-10 working days, or within 24 hours of if it is an emergency fault.

A streetlight fault is classed as an emergency when:

  • The door plate at the base of the lighting column has been removed.
  • The lantern is loose or hanging off the column.
  • Lighting to an illuminated bollard is faulty or missing.
  • A lighting column is leaning.
  • There is a problem with the electricity cable feeding the column.

To report an emergency streetlight fault by phone:

  • Phone 0161 253 5353 (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday)
  • Phone 0161 253 6606 (outside normal working hours)

Streetlight enquiries

I want to widen my driveway - how do I get a streetlight relocated?

In most cases, streetlights can be relocated to allow driveways to be widened. As this is considered to be an improvement to a private property, all costs have to be paid by the householder. We will provide a quotation for the work, following a site inspection.
