We are replacing the road surface on this highway as part of our £30 million Highway Investment Programme. The cost of this scheme is £377,000.

This will involve mechanically removing the existing road surface and laying a new surface course.  

Start and finish dates

Works have been programmed outside of school term time to reduce disruption.

  • Proposed start date: 28 July 2025
  • Expected completion date: 22 August 2025

Start and finish dates may change due to circumstances out of our control, for example, utility works or weather conditions.

Dates and times of work

Work will take place on weekday evenings, between 8pm and 5am on the following dates.

  • 28, 29, 30, 31 July and 1 August
  • 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 August
  • 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 August
  • 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 August

Roads will be open outside of these times.

What to expect

During the working hours, traffic control measures will be in place to ensure everyone’s safety.

  • From the junction with Spring Lane to Ainsworth Road: Temporary traffic two-way signals will be in place.
  • From the junction with Spring Lane to Blackburn Street: The road will be closed. A local diversion route will be clearly signed. Alternative route - Spring Lane, Rectory Lane, Church Street West, Dale Street, A665 and vice versa.

Please note: During the works, vehicle access to properties and adjoining streets may be limited. Emergency Services will be notified in advance and will always be given access.

Highway funding and priorities

Funding

With the limited funding we have, we are doing the best we can to keep the roads in good repair and make them better for everyone.

Our extra £30 million highway investment programme is gradually improving the borough’s roads, but we must continue to prioritise repairs based on available funding and other key factors.

Each year we spend around £3.5 million on highway resurfacing schemes. We also spend about £1 million per year on preventative maintenance to keep more roads in good repair and reduce the number of potholes forming in the future.

Like all councils we have limited funds and can’t fix all road defects at the same time. To resurface every road in our borough would cost around £300 million!

Prioritisation

Road defects that are a threat to safety are always prioritised first. Lower risk repairs are prioritised based on:

  • Road type
  • Size of defect
  • Road position
  • Number of highway users
  • Whether we already plan to fix the issue as part of a larger scheme

By prioritising repairs consistently, we can ensure we maintain the highway fairly and that we spend our limited funds wisely.

Transforming travel

Via the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, we also get UK Government funding for sustainable travel improvements. This funding must be spent on highway schemes that improve the network for public transport, walking, wheeling and cycling.
