1. Introduction


Bury Council is committed to ensuring that we are transparent about the ways in which we use your personal information and that we have the right controls in place to ensure it is used responsibly and is kept safe from inappropriate access, theft or misuse.

Our core data protection obligations and commitments are set out in the Bury Council Privacy Notice.

This notice provides additional privacy information for Waste Management and Transport.

2. What information we will collect from you (the purpose and legal basis for processing information)

We collect personal information from residents to carry out activities relating to Waste Management and Transport.

The information we may collect, store and use can include, but is not limited to:

  • Name
  • Title
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  • Email address
  • Bank account details
  • Images or stories about your business

3. How do we use personal information?

The main purpose for collecting and using your personal information is to address your query, issue or complaint or any further issues which may arise as a result.

4. Legal basis for processing personal data

The legal bases we rely on for processing your personal information are:

  • You have entered into a contract with us
  • It is necessary to perform statutory functions (including law enforcement functions)
  • You have given your consent

5. Who do we share your personal information with?

We may share data or information internally within the organisation where it is necessary to do so in order to fulfil a public task, comply with legal obligations, fulfil contractual obligations, or otherwise necessary for the purposes for which the information was collected. The following Council teams or departments are whom we principally, but not solely, may share data or information with

  • Contact Centre
  • Council Tax
  • Legal Team
  • Insurance Team
  • Enforcement

We may also share information with external organisations where it is necessary to do so in order to fulfil the purposes for which the information was collected, or to fulfil a public task, or comply with legal or contractual obligations. This may include:

  • Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA)
  • Metropolitan Police
  • Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)

6. How we ensure the security of your data

Bury Council is committed to ensuring personal data we hold about you remains secure. To protect your data, we:

  • Ensure all staff receive annual training in GDPR
  • Minimise access to personal data to only those who require it
  • Review access permissions regularly
  • Password protect data leaving the council
  • Only share information with those who have permission to view it
  • Lock personal information stored physically away

7. Information retention

We will only retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, including for the purposes of satisfying any future legal, accounting, or reporting requirements.

We must continue to retain necessary information in accordance with our Information Retention Policy to fulfil legal, statutory, and regulatory requirements.

8. Transferring data

All personal data collected from you will remain in the UK.

9. What rights do individuals have?


Bury Council must comply with the UK General Data Protection Regulations (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

  • Under data protection law, your rights include:
  • Your right of access - You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information.
  • Your right to rectification - You have the right to ask us to rectify information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete.
  • Your right to erasure - You have the right to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances.
  • Your right to restriction of processing - You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your information in certain circumstances.
  • Your right to object to processing - You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data in certain circumstances.
  • Your right to data portability - You have the right to ask that we transfer the information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances.
  • Your right to be informed – You have the right to be informed about the collection and use of your personal data
  • Rights relating to automated decision making and profiling – You have the right to challenge decisions made solely by automated means without any human involvement

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you.
