This page was last reviewed on 14 August 2020.

The Government have announced new temporary business rate reliefs and grants for businesses in response to the coronavirus pandemic. This page contains information on:

Business rates discounts

Expanded retail, hospitality and leisure discount

If you received a retail discount in 2019/20, you will not have to pay business rates in 2020/21.

The discount has been expanded to include both businesses:

  • in the hospitality and leisure sectors
  • in the retail, leisure and hospitality sectors with a rateable value over £51,000

You do not have to apply for this discount. We have identified businesses that are entitled and have issued new bills to them.

Find out more about this discount and how to apply if you have not received an updated bill.

Nursery discount

Nurseries will not have to pay business rates in 2020/21. To qualify for this relief your business will be:

  • on Ofsted's Early Years Register
  • wholly or mainly used for the provision of the Early Years Foundation Stage

You do not have to apply for this discount. We have identified businesses that are entitled and have issued new bills to them.

If you cannot pay your business rates this month

The coronavirus outbreak is having a significant impact on businesses in the borough and many people are contacting us to say they are struggling to pay their business rates.

If you are still able to make payment as shown on your last bill, it's important that you do this.

If you are unable to pay your business rates we need you to contact us. But before you do please take a moment to check:

We may be able to agree a special payment plan to support your business. This will depend on your circumstances, after you have received all the discounts and reliefs you are entitled to. We can consider:

  • moving your instalment date
  • increasing the number of your instalments from 10 to 12, if you haven't already done so - this can reduce the amount you have to pay each month
  • deferring a month's payment

We have suspended the sending of reminders and all other recovery notices until the end of June 2020. This is to give businesses breathing space to contact us and for us to assess their circumstances. We will shortly be contacting people with arrears to ask them to get in touch with us to discuss their payment options.
