Pubs, rural businesses and local newspapers
There was a £1000 business rates discount for pubs for the financial year 2019-20.
For the financial year 2020-21 pubs will be covered by the retail, hospitality and leisure discount, and will not have to pay business rates.

Discounts for businesses in rural areas
Some businesses providing essential services in rural areas can get up to 100% rural rate relief if they are:
- the only village shop or post office, with a rateable value of up to £8,500
- the only public house or petrol station, with a rateable value of up to £12,500
An area is classed as 'rural' if it has a population below 3000. In the borough the areas of Ainsworth, Hawkshaw, Shuttleworth and Summerseat fall into this category.

Local newspaper relief
There is a £1500 business rates discount available for office space occupied by local newspapers. This relief was introduced in April 2017 and will be available until 31 March 2025.
