Keeping safe and cool during the hot weather
18th June 2025
With hot weather upon us, we want to ensure that everyone stays safe, cool and comfortable during this time. Warmer temperatures can affect our health, especially for older people, so please follow these simple steps to look after yourself and others this summer.
Stay cool indoors:
- Keep your curtains or blinds closed in rooms that get direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day (11am – 3pm).
- Use fans if you have them and try to spend time in the coolest parts of your home.
Keep hydrated:
- Drink plenty of fluids including water, diluted squash or tea, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Try to avoid alcohol or drinks with a lot of caffeine, as these can make you more dehydrated.
Dress appropriately:
- Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made of natural materials like cotton.
- A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can help protect you if you’re heading outdoors.
Eat light:
- Eat smaller, cooler meals like salads or fruit and avoid hot, heavy foods if you’re feeling too warm.
Be mindful outdoors:
- If you go out, try to do so in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.
- Always wear sunscreen and take breaks in the shade.
Look out for others:
- If you have neighbours who may need support, please check in on them or make sure someone else is.
- If you start to feel unwell in the heat, such as feeling dizzy, weak or confused, please don’t ignore it. Let someone know or contact a healthcare professional.
Your well-being is our priority, and we hope everyone has a lovely summer weekend! You can find further advice and helpful tips on the Age UK website here and The Met Office website here.
