Heading off on holiday? Keep damp and mould at bay while you’re away
1st July 2025
Planning a well-earned break? Before you set off, take a few simple steps to keep your home fresh and mould-free. Damp can creep in when your home is unoccupied but with a bit of prep, you can come back to a house just as healthy as you left it.
- Give Your Home a Final Air-Out: Before locking up, open windows and internal doors for 10–15 minutes to let stale air out and reduce indoor moisture. A quick freshen-up goes a long way.
- Water Plants Carefully: Avoid overwatering your houseplants. Standing water is a haven for mould growth. A light watering before you go is best or ask someone to help water them while you’re away.
- Check Your Extractor Fans: Extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms help remove moisture at the source. Make sure they’re working properly before you leave and if they’re not, contact us.
- Set Heating to Auto: British summer weather can be unpredictable. If temperatures drop, set your heating system to kick in to prevent cold spots and condensation both of which can encourage mould.
- Keep Window Vents Open: Even when you're not home, airflow matters. Leave window vents open to allow gentle ventilation throughout the property.
- Dry Laundry Before You Go: Clothes left drying indoors can add significant moisture to the air. Make sure everything is dry and stored away before you head off.
By following these tips, you’ll be helping to keep your home in great condition and reducing the risk of damp and mould taking hold while you're away. If you find you’re having consistent issues, please report them here so we can figure out the problem!
