E-Bike Safety Guidelines

At Bury Housing Services, your safety is our top priority. As e-bikes and e-scooters become a popular, eco-friendly mode of transport, we wanted to share a list of guidelines with you to ensure that your e-bike is charged, stored, and maintained safely.

Please take a moment to read through these tips and try to include them in your everyday routine. Doing so will keep you safe and help protect everyone in your community. If you have any questions or require further assistance regarding safe practices, please contact us here.

Charging Safety

  • Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always read and follow the specific guidelines provided by your e-bike’s manufacturer.
  • Use Approved Chargers: Use only the chargers supplied or approved by the manufacturer and unplug them when not in use.
  • Charge While Alert: Charge batteries when you are awake and alert and avoid charging them while sleeping.
  • Safe Charging Locations: Keep charging areas away from flammable materials and avoid overcharging or overloading electrical sockets.

Storage Tips

  • Cool and Consistent Environment: Store your e-bike or e-scooter in a cool, well-ventilated area, ensuring it is not exposed to extreme temperatures.
  • Clear Pathways: Avoid placing or charging your device in areas that could block escape routes or reduce access to communal spaces.
  • Shared Spaces: In communal buildings, tenants and staff should advise on and monitor safe storage and charging practices.

Buying Guidance

  • Purchase from Reputable Sellers: Buy e-bikes and accessories from trusted sellers to minimize the risk of counterfeit products.
  • Register Your Product: Register your new device with the manufacturer to receive important recall updates and safety information.
  • Standards and Compatibility: When purchasing components, ensure they comply with relevant safety standards and are compatible with your device.

Damage and Disposal

  • Battery Integrity: Replace any damaged batteries immediately, do not attempt to repair them yourself.
  • Proper Disposal: Never dispose of damaged batteries in household waste. Instead, use designated recycling services or consult with Bury Council to ensure safe disposal and to prevent any fire hazards.

Emergency Advice

  • Battery Fire Protocol: In the unlikely event of a battery fire, do not attempt to extinguish it with conventional methods. Instead, evacuate the area and call emergency services as soon as you can.
