“One in two of us will be directly affected by dementia in our lifetime, either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves or both”

Alzheimer’s Research UK’s report Tipping point: the future of dementia

Bury’s Dementia Strategy

In Bury, we are working together as a system to support people living with dementia and their families and carers. Bury’s Dementia Strategy has been developed with a programme delivery plan which has prioritised key areas of focus for the next 5 years.

Throughout 2025 – 2026, the main priorities are to:

  1. Develop a business case for change under the GM Live Well with Dementia.
  2. Map current availability of post-diagnostic support and interventions, identify potential demand and capacity required and develop options for improved provision.
  3. Full review of the dementia diagnostic pathway and to maintain dementia diagnosis rates above 67%.
  4. Development a carer support package which can be used across the system to ensure a consistent approach is taken.
  5. Development a dementia comms strategy to raise awareness of Dementia and provide information and advice.
  6. Complete asset mapping with Bury VCFA to understand the availability of services to support dementia across Bury.
  7. Development of a dementia co-production network for people with lived experience.

Dementia United

As a locality of Greater Manchester, we continue to work closely with Dementia United, Greater Manchester Integrated Care’s programme for dementia.

In Greater Manchester there are established work streams bringing together the NHS, public services, and the wider community together to deliver integrated, person-centred care and support that enables people to live a good life.

The Greater Manchester programme is called `Dementia United’ because partners are united in the longstanding vision to improve the quality and experience of care for everyone affected by dementia, and to deliver this vision across the whole of the region.

Greater Manchester Dementia and Brain Health Delivery Plan 2023 – 2025 sets out of the vision for the region. The purpose of the plan is to work in co-production with partners across Greater Manchester to deliver meaningful reform and quality improvement. There are four key strategic aims: System quality Improvement; Brain health and wellbeing: Education and training; Research and innovation. The work on dementia and brain health quality standards sits under system quality improvement.

“One in two of us will be directly affected by dementia in our lifetime, either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves or both”. Taken from Alzheimer’s Research UK’s report Tipping point: the future of dementia.

Accompanying the delivery plan is the Greater Manchester Dementia and Brain Health Quality Standards. The standards aim to promote equity of services, improve quality of experience, and allow for consistent evaluation across our complex system. This is in line with Greater Manchester’s approach to “drive consistent improvement, reduce unwarranted variation and make the best use of our collective resources” (Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership Strategy, 2023).
