If you are an adult apprentice, you can apply for a Council Tax reduction if you are:
- doing a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)
- employed for the learning of a trade, business, profession, office employment or vocation
- earning less than £195 per week.
Discount rates and how to apply
There are different discount rates depending on who lives in the property and their circumstances.
If a person who lives with you is eligible for a different discount, you could also receive a reduction or exemption.
Household circumstance | Discount rate |
Two or more adults resident, all of them qualify for a discount, including one apprentice discount | 50 percent |
Two adults resident and one of them is classed as an apprentice | 25 percent |
Three adults resident and two of them qualify for Council Tax discounts, either due to being an apprentice or any other type of discount | 25 percent |
Three or more adults resident and only one of them qualifies for a Council Tax discount for being an apprentice | No discount |
The person responsible for Council Tax, or someone on their behalf, can apply for an apprentice discount.
When applying, you will need to upload your:
- National Vocational Qualification certificate
- apprenticeship agreement between you and your employer
- most recent payslip.

If your application is successful, we'll send you a revised Council Tax bill. If you're unsuccessful, we'll explain why the discount is not being awarded.
