Register as a bird keeper
It is a legal requirement for bird keepers to register their birds with the government, even if you keep birds as pets. The only exception is for keepers of indoor pet birds that do not have any outside access.
Once you are registered, you will receive important updates on any local avian disease outbreaks and information on biosecurity rules to help protect your birds.
Animals included are chickens, turkeys, aviary birds, birds of prey, cassowaries, ducks, emus, geese, guinea fowls, kiwis, ostriches, partridges, pheasants, pigeons, psittacines (for example parrots, budgies and cockatiels), quails, rheas.
The service is different depending on how many birds you keep:
- GOV.UK - register as a keeper of up to 49 poultry or other captive birds
- GOV.UK - register as a keeper of 50 or more poultry or other captive birds
Please note: If your details change after you have registered you may need to tell the APHA.
