Emergency repairs at Bury New Road, Prestwich (junction with Fairfax Road)

A high-pressure water main is leaking and must be repaired promptly to avoid significant future issues. United Utilities works will start from 7pm on Tuesday 2 December to complete the urgent repair overnight. Temporary multi-way lights will replace the existing traffic lights.

During Wednesday 3 December reinstatement works are planned. After the reinstatement work is completed, temporary lights will stay in place on Thursday morning while the surface sets. During this time the lights will be supervised.

Important information

As part of Fairfax Road is already closed for #YourPrestwich regeneration scheme, traffic flow through the area is likely to be slower than usual. Please allow extra travel time.

We’re working closely with @UnitedUtilities to keep disruption from these essential works to a minimum and ensure repairs are completed as quickly as possible to avoid more extensive damage. For general or water supply issues the number for United Utilities is 0345 782 3273.

Part of Fairfax Road – from 13 October 2025 to July 2026

A short stretch of Fairfax Road is closed on weekdays in both directions to support construction of the new Prestwich Travel Hub. The road will reopen most weekends between 5pm Friday and 7am Monday. See more information and Q&A about the closure
