You can apply for us to paint an access protection road marking in front of your driveway to deter other motorists from parking in front of it. The marking is also known as a H-bar because it looks like a stretched letter H.

An access protection marking is only for guidance and not legally enforceable.

If a parked vehicle is obstructing your driveway:

  • you can contact the Police on 101 who have powers to carry out enforcement
  • our parking services contractor may be able to assist if the vehicle is parked alongside a dropped kerb, phone 0344 870 5545

Criteria for applying

  • You must have a driveway or garage
  • You must already have a dropped kerb accessing a driveway
  • There must be no other parking restrictions in front of your driveway (for example, yellow lines)
  • Access protection markings highlight an access point. They do not indicate a reserved parking space and you should not regularly park on them
  • You are responsible for the full cost of the marking (and any renewal costs)
  • If a driveway or dropped kerb is shared by more than one property, the marking should be installed across whole dropped kerb. We will contact your neighbour for their agreement

Please note: We will not install a marking, or may remove a marking, if we think it may cause problems with your neighbours.

Charges

  • £50 (non-refundable) for application and assessment, plus
  • £70 for installation (if the application is successful), or
  • £90 for renewal

How to apply

After you submit your application

We will inspect the site and if your application is approved you will be required to pay the installation charge.

Once payment is received the marking will be installed within approximately 60 days (subject to weather and site conditions).
