About the bridge and scheme
The bridge carries Market Street over the East Lancashire Railway line and is a key route in and out of the town centre.
Inspections of the bridge have identified that works are required to ensure its structural stability.
The scheme will replace the existing bridge bearings, which are crucial for supporting the bridge and keeping it stable.
These essential works will ensure the bridge remains safe, reliable and fully operational for all road users, pedestrians and for the East Lancashire Railway line running underneath it.
The cost of the scheme is £500,000.
Start and finish dates
This scheme is expected to take approximately five months to complete.
- Proposed start date: 27 May 2025
- Proposed completion date: October 2025
What to expect
Once the work gets underway the following traffic management will be in place.
- Market Street will be closed between the Pyramid Park access road and the Bury Athletics track entrance
- The diversion route will be: Angouleme Way, Manchester Road and Wellington Road and vice–versa
While it is unfortunate that some disruption is unavoidable during schemes of this nature, we will aim to minimise this as much as possible.
