Introduction
Bury Archives Service was established in 1986 to manage both the historical records of the local authorities amalgamated to form Bury Metropolitan Borough in 1974, and records from private local organisations deposited over many years with the local library and museum services.
The records deposited with the service have increasingly been made accessible to the public and thanks to the continued co-operation of council officers and the generosity of private owners a great deal of new material has been deposited over the years.
The Archives Service holds varied unique records, including written documents, maps, plans and photographs. The types of organisations that these records cover are detailed in brief on the holdings summaries section of this website and records are searchable through the online catalogue. The Archives Service is not combined with Local Studies, for which records can be found in the Reference and Information section of Bury Library. Holdings for Local Studies include many published sources and the main resources for family history.
