Gary is forty seven years old and has recently started receiving support through the Shared Lives scheme, he is supported by Lilian, who is an approved Shared Lives carer.
Lilian has recently retired after completing twenty two years service for Bolton Council working with people with learning disabilities and not wanting to 'sit around' applied to become a Shared Lives carer supporting a person through a long term placement.
Until quite recently Gary was living in a family environment but due to changes in circumstances a new living situation needed to be found. Following a referral for a long term placement which was made to the scheme by Gary's care manager a process of matching took place, this involved identifying carers who might be suitable to support Gary from within the pool of carers on the scheme.
Lilian was identified as a possible carer and a series of introductory visits were organised which included meeting for a drink, going for a meal and having a meal at Lilian's house. Following the success of these visits a 'trial period' for both Lilian and Gary was arranged, which also proved successful, this resulted in Gary moving to Lilian's on a long term placement.
The aim of the placement is to support Gary to live within a caring family environment. Lilian is supporting Gary to increase his living skills and to promote his independence. Since moving Gary has enjoyed holidays away with Lilian's family and is supported to maintain his full and active lifestyle.
