Household waste and kerbside collections

Green bin collection crew

Our collection crews collect household waste from over 80,000 properties every week.  We empty:

  • grey bins (for waste you cannot recycle) once every two weeks;
  • brown bins (for recycling garden waste and food waste) once every two weeks all year round;
  • blue bins (for recycling glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, aluminium and steel food and drink cans, empty aerosols and clean aluminium foil) once every four weeks; and
  • green bins (for recycling paper and cardboard) once every four weeks.

Join the race to recycle in Bury

Sending waste to landfill cannot carry on forever.  Space is running out and the cost is rapidly increasing.

Recycle for Bury ... Every household counts!

Recycling in Bury is on the up but we still have some way to go to meet out target to recycle 50% or more.

Since we improved your recycling service Bury's recycling rate has risen from nearly 28% (one of the lowest rates in Greater Manchester) to almost 46% (the third best rate in Greater Manchester).  This has saved Bury tax payers more than £1 million.

Thank you for recycling more. This upsurge in recycling is a fantastic achievement but our target is to recycle 50% or more by April 2013 and save at least a further £800,000.  We know this target is achievable because residents in other areas, such as in Stockport, already recycle almost 65%.

It pays to recycle ...

  • We get £25 per tonne from the recycling you put in your green bin.
  • We get £25 per tonne from the recycling you put in your blue bin.
  • We only pay £55 per tonne to turn the recycling in your brown bin into compost.
  • It costs £210 per tonne to send what you put in your grey bin to landfill.

Could you recycle more?

For example, if every household were to recycle just one more food tin or one more empty aerosol can every week this would keep nearly 200 tonnes more waste out of landfill and save over £45,000.
