Land drainage

Our Engineering Consultancy Service, manages our roles as an "Operating Authority" under the terms of the Land Drainage Act 1991 and as an "Enforcement Authority" under the terms of the Reservoirs Act 1975. The Borough contains some 50km of ordinary watercourse and has, in relation to these watercourses, certain powers, duties and responsibilities regarding:
  • the prevention and mitigation of the effects of flooding from various causes;
  • the maintenance of flows in ordinary watercourses.
The service investigates incidents of flooding, advises riparian owners on their responsibilities and necessary remedial works and designs and supervises works to ordinary watercourses and structures where the Authority is the "riparian owner" Under the Reservoirs Act 1975 the section carries out the following principal duties:
  • Maintenance of the Register of Large Raised Reservoirs. Currently containing information on 15 large raised reservoirs.
  • Ensuring that the owners of reservoirs on the Register appoint Supervising and Inspecting Engineers and carry out inspections at regular intervals.
  • Ensuring that owners carry out repairs / remedial works in the interests of safety as recommended by their Inspecting Engineers.
