Types of support provided

Support for the parent Carer:

  • With the disabled child being cared for in their home.
  • With siblings and disabled child being looked after to allow complete time out following assessment.

Who is the service for?

This is an alternative care service for parent carers, who are responsible for the substantial or regular care of their child with disabilities, disabling conditions or long term ill health to allow the carer a break.

Criteria for and how to access the service

Carers will need to request a carer's assessment, which should identify the "Break needs" of the Carer. Referrals should be made direct via Social Workers or Social Care Officers to the Scheme Co-ordinator. Access to the service will be via a referral from Social Services. In the first instance the service can only be provided after the following has been carried out:

  • a carer's assessment
  • a risk assessment
  • an assessment of the child's need by a social worker
