The centre of Prestwich has undergone a period of decline for many years despite having many of the raw ingredients that make up successful 'urban' villages (such as good community facilities, good access to public transport, good access to parks and green spaces, and the close proximity of residential areas to the retail centre).
There has already been significant investment in Prestwich in recent years; The Radius development (which brought town centre living and new retail space), a new M&S food store, and investment in the pedestrian infrastructure, but so far this has not yet been sufficient to reverse the decline of the centre.
However, major new development opportunities are beginning to emerge (including the potential redevelopment of the Longfield Shopping Centre and the creation a major new health care facilities) and Prestwich is likely to go through a period of significant change over the next 5 - 15 years.
Prestwich is therefore now at an important time where an innovative master plan and development strategy is needed to guide the emerging development opportunities and to unlock the full potential of the village as a vibrant and dynamic place and key destination within the Manchester conurbation. In December 2007 Bury Council appointed the urban design and regeneration consultancy URBED together with the specialist regeneration surveying practice AGDR to develop this strategy. In January 2009 the Council also appointed the planning consultancy Drivers Jonas to undertake a retail capacity assessment to inform the conclusions of the strategy.
Love Prestwich Village: Town Centre Development Strategy
On 8 July 2009 the Council's Executive Committee approved the Love Prestwich Village: Town Centre Development Strategy for implementation purposes and adoption as a non statutory Material Planning Consideration to guide and control future development proposals. The approved strategy will also form part of the evidence base for the Local Development Framework.
The approved strategy and its key supporting documents are available to download.
The approved strategy has been informed by an extensive process of public and stakeholder consultation. To see details of the results of this consultation process go to the Prestwich Consultations web page.
