Peel Tower Restoration

Project description

There are long term proposals to improve the monument to include new visitor facilities and a local base for the National Trust who manage the surrounding moorland. The project will also seek to improve the access up to and across the moors.

Progress to date

Consultant architects have completed a condition survey of the building and prepared proposals for the provision of new facilities. An archaeological survey has been completed of the moor to support future funding bids. The first phase of the project is the erection of a cap to protect the interior. These works were completed within December 2001 enabling the Tower to be re-opened to the public in January 2002.

  • Improved access (physical and intellectual) to the moors.
  • Restoration and enhancement of a key landmark.
  • Base for management and interpretation of the monument and moors.

Project costs

The overall project has been split into four main cost areas (all inc. fees) : Phase Works Cost Capping of the tower - clean & dry interior £15,000 restoration and enhancement of the tower £290,000, enhancement of the main vehicle access inc. drainage 15,000; enhancement of the moor land paths & re-establishment of vegetation £5,000; estimated project costs £325,000.
