Every year millions of people suffer from food poisoning such as Salmonella and Campylobacter.
This causes unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.
In a small number of cases the illness can be much more severe leading to hospitalisation and in some cases death.
Anyone suffering from the symptoms of food poisoning should visit their GP who may arrange to take a sample.
If it turns out to be food poisoning the doctor will notify the Health Protection Agency who may also tell the Local Authority if they suspect an outbreak or a link to a food business.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if it is food poisoning?
The only way to tell is for your GP to send a sample to the laboratory for testing.
Is it caused by the last meal I ate?
It takes time for the infection to develop inside the gut (typically 12-36 hours) so it may be caused by food eaten the day before or even two days ago.
What should I do if I work as a food handler and develop symptoms?
Stop work, tell your supervisor, visit your GP and do not resume work until at least 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped.
