About Planning Policy
Welcome to the web pages of the Planning Policy team. Our main task is to draw up planning policies and work on the Borough's development plan (which is a planning policy framework that planning applications are decided against).
If you are new to planning, you may find it useful to refer to our jargon buster page when reading through this page or our other related pages.
Bury's current development plan is the Unitary Development Plan which was officially adopted in 1997. The UDP is to be replaced by a new plan called the Local Plan. We have more information on what the Local Plan is, and what it will contain on our dedicated Local Plan web pages. You can get involved in the formation of Bury's new planning policies. See our community involvement page.
In addition, we are also involved in:
- Producing supplementary planning advice and documents. These publications were called Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) and are linked to Bury's UDP. New supplementary publications are now called Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs). These documents supplement matters covered in the development plan. For more information, see our dedicated supplementary planning guidance page.
- Undertaking planning policy research and information work on a variety of topics including housing, employment, retailing and other land use issues such as town centre vitality and environmental protection. For more information, see our research and information page.
- Monitoring and appraising planning policies. For more information, see our sustainability appraisal and annual monitoring reports pages.
- Transport planning, including the Greater Manchester Local Transport Plan.
