Special educational needs

The authority has a duty under S323, Education Act 1996, to undertake a statutory assessment of any child or young person who it considers may have special educational needs, and for whom it may be necessary for the authority to determine any special educational provision.

The responsibility for arranging statutory assessment lies with the Special Educational Needs Team (SEN Team). Statutory assessment requires that the authority seeks advice from those people who are involved with the child/young person. At the completion of the assessment, the authority will determine if it is necessary to make any special educational provision to meet the child/young person's needs. Parents may also wish to contact the Bury Parent Partnership. The partnership is independent of the authority and provides advice and support to parents of children/young people who may have special educational needs.
